Two individuals have been remanded to judicial custody by a local court in Mahisagar district following the death of a Dalit man who was allegedly assaulted over a food order. The incident occurred in the Isroda village of Mahisagar district, where the victim, identified as Raju Vankar, suffered critical injuries after expressing dissatisfaction with his daal-baati parcel from a highway eatery. Vadgam Congress legislator Jignesh Mevani criticized the police for not taking note of the victim’s condition during his hospitalization.
Days after a Dalit man was allegedly assaulted over a food order in the Mahisagar district and died of injuries, a local court remanded two accused to judicial custody. The Mahisagar district police produced the two accused before the magistrate on Monday following their arrest on Sunday night.
The victim, Raju Vankar, an autorickshaw driver from Isroda village in the Mahisagar district, passed away on June 9, two days after the alleged assault. According to the police, Vankar suffered critical injuries when the accused attacked him over a daal-baati parcel he had ordered from a highway eatery in Limbadiya village, Khanpur, on the evening of June 7. The accused, identified as Dhanabhai, the manager of the hotel, and his relative Amit Patel, allegedly assaulted Vankar when he expressed dissatisfaction with the parcel he had received.
PS Valvi, Deputy Superintendent of Police (SC ST Cell), Mahisagar, stated, “We arrested the accused on Sunday night. They were produced before the court Monday and sent to judicial custody as we did not seek police remand. There is no aspect of the investigation now that requires them to be in police custody.”
Expressing concern over the handling of the case, Vadgam Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani criticized the police for not taking note of Vankar’s condition during his hospitalization between June 7 and June 9. Mevani, who visited the victim’s family at the SSG Hospital, demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and urged the authorities to ensure justice for Vankar.
