Uttarakhand: Upper Caste Students Refuse To Eat Midday Meal Prepared By Dalit Woman

An unsightly incident of Caste discrimination has come in to light from Champawat district of Uttarakhand where Hindu Upper Caste students refuse to eat midday meal prepared by a Dalit woman.

Sunita Devi, a Scheduled Caste woman, was recently appointed as a cook (Bhojmata) to prepare midday meals for students from 6 to 8 standard at a government-run secondary school in Jaul village in Champawat district.

Said Prem Singh, Principal of Government Inter College, Sukhidhang.

“She was appointed following all government norms, We had received 11 applications for the post of bhojanmata. She was selected in an open meeting of the parent teacher association and school management committee held in the first week of this month,”

the principal said
